Scholars at Polytechnique Montreal explore new opportunities

Updated: May 16, 2022

Skill Building

Hanane Ikhelef has had a great experience working as a teaching assistant for multiple programming courses at Polytechnique Montreal. Hanane says “Helping the students develop, learn and have a positive influence on them made me discover my passion for teaching.”

Pioneering

Data Science and Artificial Intelligence are dominating the Software Engineering world, thanks to their various and multiple applications, which are massively changing people's lives. As part of an Aritificial Intelligence Introductory course, Nabil Dabouz, with his teammate, had the chance to explore the power of AI algorithms by developing an AI Agent that autonomously plays the Quoridor game. During the development process, Nabil had the chance to go through several work studies and research papers to identify the best possible solutions that can be used to tackle the problem. After submitting his solution, he participated in a competition where his AI Agent was ranked among the top 8 submitted solutions in his class.

Community Impact

The number of forest fires has increased remarkably in recent years. Scientists believe that the Seasonal Severity Rating (SSR) in North American forests, for example, will increase by 10 to 15% by 2050. This represents a major problem for humanity. Contributing to solve this issue, Yassine Zarrad worked at the end of his junior year as an electrical engineering student on the development of a mesh microcontrollers network that uses the LoRa telecommunication protocol to rapidly detect forest fires. Unlike the satellite surveillance, Yassine’s prototype offers a very cheap and affordable solution that provides high performance and accurate detections regardless of weather conditions (cloudy sky, fog, etc.)

Fun & Inspiration

Abdelkader Zobiri decided to become a veterinarian assistant at a cat shelter manager in his neighborhood. Abdelkader says “I have always been a cat person. My love towards these fluffy cute creatures is so big that my friends and I find it funny to think that I could be a cat in some parallel universe. My first weeks of work weren’t easy. Most of the cats were victims of abandonment, abuse, and mistreatment. The cats had trust issues, some of them were very aggressive, and others even refused to eat. I was happy that I developed the necessary skills to treat, feed, and connect with them so that I can give them the health care they deserve.”
